Opening day May 8th

Hi everyone. The opening day of our Farm Market is coming soon.  We will open May 8th. I hope the weather cooperates better than this weekend, too chilly! Asparagus from our farm will be available, and loads of other fruits and veggies. There will be a great selection of plants, including Hanging Baskets, Annuals and Perennials. The stand is fully stocked with Gift Items, Preserves, Salsa, Cheese, Eggs, and more. There are a lot of great ideas to give Mom for Mothers Day!

I can not believe we are expected to get a Frost in the next couple of nights. George set up irrigation to protect our strawberries. When you water them during the frosty temps, it saves them from dying.  Our corn, beans and peas are up, so we have to hope for the best. If not, we just replant.  I knew we could not get away with some colder weather this year.

It was great to see everyone at the Chamber of Commerce Expo. It is always a great time. This year we were next to the dogs up for adoption. It is a miracle I did not take one home. They were adorable!  I hope to see everyone soon.

Peaches are in full blossom

The beautiful peach blossoms!

Hi everyone.  The Farm looks so beautiful with the peaches in full blossom. This is about 2-3 weeks early. We dodged the “Frost Bullet” and the blossoms still look viable.  Temperatures were in the 20′s some of the mornings.  The Apples are not in blossom yet, but they are soon to follow.  George planted peas, snap peas, beans about  2 weeks ago, and they are popping out of the ground.  He planted corn yesterday, so we can look forward to an earlier season this year.  We will open May 8th, and things should be a lot nicer this year than last. It was so cold last year for so long, the hanging baskets, and bedding plants were smaller than usual. This year they will be spectacular.

We are still busy pruning our peaches, cleaning up the stand and the grounds surrounding, there is so much to do!  George plowed next to the stand, because we will be planting new peach trees this year on that spot.  Every year we get new fruit trees to keep up our orchards.  Fruit trees do not last forever!   I think I have given up my idea to have a mini-donkey in that spot!  Maybe someday.  We should have an old fashioned barn raising.   Happy Spring.

Farm News

Hi everyone.  Things are moving along at the farm. George and I finished pruning our Apple trees, and will soon move on to our Peach trees.  George is trying to fix our Air Compressor, so we can get to it! We use an air compressor with “guns” that cut the peach limbs. It is loud; you can hardly hear yourself think. We are hoping it stays on the cooler side. We do not want the fruit trees to bloom too early, you run the risk of fruit buds freezing later on with temperature flucuations.  We are catching up on all our projects. I have been trying a lot of new recipes. Smittenkitchen.com is a great resource for fruit and veggie recipes. I recently tried a Strawberry Cake and Strawberry Dumplings from that site and both were delicious.  Of course I have Hindinger Strawberries in the freezer to use in my recipes.

Our CSA is growing, we have about 140 members so far, and still have openings.  We decided to do just one Farmers Market in New Haven for City Seed, so we can focus on our CSA more.   We will be offering our CSA members a 10 percent dicount this year when they shop at the farmstand.

Pastor George Manukas from Dunbar United Church of Christ will continue the tradition of the Easter Sunrise Service at Hindinger Farm.  We hope for a beautiful sunrise this year, last year  the sun did not show itself! It will be good luck to the farm if it does this year, a sign of things to come! More sunshine!  See you soon.

CSA membership still available

We still have space for our 2012 CSA. It has been a great winter (no Snow!), and we look forward to an even better spring.  Life has been busy. We are ahead on the apple pruning, because of the great weather, and Mom and I went to two gift shows to shop four our gifts to sell this year.  We went to Philadelphia and New York.  We purchased some beautiful things that are affordable.  It was fun to go to Philly, we have not been to that show in a while. There were some gorgeous patterns on the quilt throws we bought, and we purchased a lot of thoses rubber trivets in cool patterns.  those work great, I use them all the time.

I have been cooking a lot, like usual.  I tried a nice Spaghetti Squash recipe that a customer gave us, Delicious.  I will keep experimenting for some new recipes to give out this year.  My husband freezes and cans so much , I have all the available ingredients. We went to Ibiza this weekend, and it was the usual fabulous food.  They come to our store to purchase the freshest ingredients. Same as Glenwood and Kellys Kone. It is great to work with other local business.  We signed up for the Hamden Chamber of Commerce Business Expo!  Nancy and Meegia at the Chamber certainly  strive to make local business come together. Happy Valentines Day.
